Before proceeding to the result part, the CASE tool list obtained from [10] is briefly described here in alphabetical order to get an overview of a specific product.

• Artiso Visual Case is a tool for software development, database design, database maintenance and business analysis developed by Artiso Corp.
• DB-MAINis a modeling tool dedicated to Database Application Engineering. Itwas originally developed by University of Namur’s LBID Lab. in 1991.
• iGrafx FlowCharter is process analysis and modeling tool developed by iGrafx.
• MetaEdit+is a tool for designing a modeling language and then generatediagramming functionalities. It was developed by Metacase company.
• Microsoft Visio is a diagramming program for Microsoft Windows that uses vector graphics to create diagrams.
• OmniGraffleis a diagramming application for Mac OS X operating system developed byThe Omni Group. It can create diagrams, flow charts, org charts, andillustrations.
• Rational Rose is aUML modeling and model-driven development tool which was developedoriginally by Rational Software. It has the ability to integrate withexisting integrated development environments or languages.
• SmartDraw is a diagramming tool developed by SmartDraw.com.

The nextstep was finding publication from digital libraries mentioned before.This finding results is listed in the following tables. You can clickthe hyperlink from the 'name' column to go to their respective officialwebsite. The 'Publication' column lists references acquired duringsearcing from digital libraries. The next column, 'executable', stateswhether a particular product has a evaluation, demo, or even finalworking executable.

The last two columns are extracolumns that were added during searching process. It was found out,that not entire product work on a similar platform. Therefore, it isnecessary to list the type of platform on which they operate.The lastcolumn, 'Price', was also considered necessary to be added becausethose products have a wide price range, from a free to thousand dollarsproducts. If a particular product has different versions, and thus hasdifferent price set, the most expensive and latest price was chosensince it would mean that product has the most complete features amongits variants.

Fromtable 1, we can conclude several point of views. First, based on thenumber of publication, Rational Rose was considered as the popularproduct being used followed by Microsoft Visio and MetaEdit+. Althoughthe relation was not clear between product popularity with the numberof publication, i could indicate a tendecy toward that relation.Second, Windows was the most supported platform for these products.Therefore, your CASE tool of choice should consider this aspect. Ifcross platform is mandatory, then the option is narrowed to RationalRose and ArgoUML.

The price column indicates a widerange of price from these products. The heftiest is MetaEdit+ and thecheapest are ArgoUML and DB-Main. So far, a conclusion cannot be drawnfrom this criteria because usually the number of features a product hasis linearly related to its price tag. Therefore, a feature comparisonneeds to be conducted for this purpose.

Table 2 comparesthe features listed in each product documentation or feature listagainst the features supported in either upper and or lower CASE.Sometimes, the documentation itself is not sufficient to describe aproduct features, or in most cases it was hard to find their features.In that case, their feature list was extracted from their officialwebsite. These feature lists can be viewed from links attached on thetabel 2's heading (retrieved on November 8, 2009).

Asthe last resort, if neither publication, documentation, nor officialfeature lists didn't contain any useful information, their executableswere installed and evaluated. Please note that some evaluation productscome up with evaluation license key. So, a registration is required toget an evaluation key emailed.

Aswe can see from table 2 above and the prices listed in table 1, pricefor a specific product relates to their features and abilities. BothRational Rose and MetaEdit+ has the most features supported and thusthe priciest product. They are currently considered as the mostcomplete CASE tool products on the market. What separate between thesetwo products is the support of domain specific modelling. MetaEdit+ hasit in their package, whereas Rational chose to sell it in a differentsoftware package. Therefore, Rational Rose priced at the lower rangethan MetaEdit+.

During the process of finding eachproduct features, interesting findings were found. Apparently, therewas a vague distinction between these products. There were twodifferent categories in term of lower and upper CASE abilities:diagramming tool and integerated tool. Visio, SmartDraw, andOmnigraffle are considered as diagramming tools. Actually, Visio wasfall into a grey area between diagramming and integrated tool becauseit has a weak database code engineering.The rest are considered asintegrated CASE tools.

Furthermore, integrated CASE toolscan be categorized into: database enabled and generally enabledintegrated tools. Database enabled only able to engineer source codefor database, whereas generally enabled tools able to engineer databaseand application source code. Visio and DB-main are considered databaseenabled. Rational Rose, MetaEdit+, Visual Analyst, ADOit, and ArgoUMLare generally enabled CASE tools.
